Next up on In the spotlight is our South African climber Fees Mabaso! We managed to chat to him during a coffee stop on his training ride in the Swiss Alps.
INTERVIEWER: Hi Fees, you're now one of the longest serving riders at Bilsky, how do you think the team has progressed since you joined?
FEES: It has been a great journey so far at Bilsky. I have ridden alongside some great riders and some of the best climbers in the world. Recently we have been able to establish ourselves as a div 4 team. I remember when we struggled to get into div 5 for the Monte Rosa, now we have to try and drop down, which is just as difficult!
INT: You mentioned the Monte Rosa, is this the teams biggest goal at the moment?
FEES: Of course, it has been since I first arrived. We had some difficult times here in Switzerland when I rode here in the early days. But since Hofman arrived, we have had two podium finishes, including a GC win by just 4 seconds, which was an amazing result. I wasn't able to ride in those tours, but would love to have another shot at supporting our leader up the formidable Monte Rosa climb!
INT: What's been your favourite moment at Bilsky?
FEES: Ooooh that's tough...… I think getting on the podium in a race at Alpstadt in Germany in season 44 has to be up there. It was the first time I was able to the leader and I was so close to the win! It's also the only result of my career so far...ah well... maybe I will get another chance at some point.
INT: Who's been your favourite rider to ride with during your career?
FEES: I'd have to say Sandro Djo. I loved riding with another African rider when he was on the team, and it's great that he's now a trainer and able to train the next generation here, with riders like Lafon and Oberman coming through. For sure, he was one of the best pure climbers I've seen in the peloton. But I can't forget other great names like Ghidarcea, Othman, Fossaert, there are so many others too.
INT: Finally, what do you think the future looks like for this team?
FEES: Hopefully it's successful. We have come a long way in a few seasons, and I hope we can continue growing as a team. Obviously the dream would be to win some more tours and classics, but as long as we enjoy our riding I'm sure these results will come!
INT: Cheers for the interview Fees, good luck for the rest of the season.....
